Visit the Pringle Nature Center, a nonprofit dedicated to putting people in touch with nature. Angela Fitzgerald tours the center, located in Bristol Woods Park, and surrounded by forest, wetland and prairie. The center offers a variety of interactive ways to discover, learn about and engage with the natural world.
Next, we head to Eau Claire, the self-proclaimed “Kubb Capital of North America.” They take this Nordic lawn game pretty seriously. The game, which involves tossing your team’s wooden blocks to knock down your opponents’ and gain strategic positions, unites players in friendly competition in the U.S. National Kubb Championship.
After that, we catch up with a group in Green Bay, Bigger Than The Trail, empowering mental wellness through outdoor running. Harnessing community to support mental health journeys, Bigger Than The Trail offers more than just a workout. By setting up group runs and events, founder Tommy Byrne has helped over 500 people across the country find solace and strength through trail running.
Then we visit Milwaukee’s Edessa School of Fashion, a new school making waves in the international fashion world. As a little girl, Edessa’s founder Lynne R. Dixon-Speller’s grandmother taught her to sew. She also gave Lynne the confidence and know-how to get a degree that would enable her to teach fashion design. Eventually she would open the Edessa School of Fashion named after her grandmother.
And finally, get to know Wisconsin author Sterling North, who wrote the beloved children’s book “Rascal” based on his childhood in Edgerton. His bittersweet story of adopting and caring for a lost baby racoon became a bestseller and eventually reached a global audience. His hometown honors his legacy at the Sterling North Home and Museum. And each summer, Japanese Rascal fans make the trek across the world to visit.
