Madison’s skating scene is taking a stride towards inclusivity with the introduction of Femme & Queer Skate Night. This grassroots initiative, born out of a need for safe and affirming spaces, is quickly gaining momentum within the community.
Held at the Monona & McPike Skate Parks in the cities of Monona and Madison on Monday and Wednesday evenings during the spring, summer, and early fall months, Femme & Queer Skate Night offers more than just a recreational activity. It’s a beacon of empowerment for femme-presenting and queer individuals, providing a platform for self-expression and solidarity.
“The group, to me, first and foremost, means feminism and empowerment,” says Timothea Stinnett, one of the organizers. ” And then after that, I would say it means having fun!”
The event draws participants from all walks of life, fostering a vibrant atmosphere of acceptance and celebration. From beginners to seasoned skaters, everyone finds their place on the rink, united by a shared passion for wheels and community.
“There’s a lot of young women and queer kids who look around and don’t see anyone who they can relate to,” remarks Stinnett. “And so, I think community is where we can kind of pull that support that isn’t familiar.”
Femme & Queer Skate Night is not just about recreation; it’s about activism. Through visibility and advocacy, organizers aim to promote LGBTQ+ rights and create lasting social change.
“While I’m there, it’s just like 2 to 4 hours straight of just like laughing and giggling and like screaming and cheering for each other.,” adds skater Somali Wilson. “And I wouldn’t want to give that up for the world.”
