Women’s Percussion Ensemble Performs Colorful Rhythms From West Africa

Mami Wata is a women’s percussion ensemble based in Madison, Wisconsin. Nine members strong, the group studies, practices, and performs the colorful rhythms from Guinea, West Africa.  Solafo, the rhythm featured in this story, was taught by Bolokada Conde.  Guinean Master drummer, Mandjou Mara, currently works with Mami Wata, teaching traditional Guinean rhythms and cultural awareness. Group member Maya Kadakia incorporates dance and choreography to help the group gain a deeper understanding and present a richer performance. Members not performing in this video are Maya Kadakia, Lindsey Smith, and Wendy Woodard.
